A reticulated leaf-type, 'Gaki no sugi' has large leaves compared to many other ghost Japanese maples. The leaves in spring are white/cream and later in early summer the new leaves can be pinky-red and have some older leaves get a slight burnt orange tone . Late summer leaves will be more of a solid green, with some reticulation showing on some leaves. Fall colours can be oranges, yellows, and reds. 'Gaki no sugi' will grow to about 6'x6' in ten years.
