One of our favorites! Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa' has a unique layering habit to the leaves; they overlap one another like shingles or tiles on a roof. Attractive leaf colour, leaf shape and pattern, and overall plant growth habit are some of the features that make this tree so attractive.
Spring leaf colour is a bright, chartreuse green, mellowing to green in summer. And fall colours are a fiery red or sometimes yellow.
'Mikawa yatsubusa' has a "life-sized" bonsai appearance without the tedious work that goes into bonsai. This variety will make a great choice for container or landscape. In the landscape, over time, 'Mikawa yatsubusa' can grow to about 4-5' tall in ten years but much more than that in time, especially if planted in the landscape.
