What Nova Scotia Already Knew!

During my recent trip to Nova Scotia I wanted to see where I might find some Japanese maples, and if you read the last blog, you'll know I did indeed find some. But, perhaps you bluenosers already knew that these awesome trees already grew there quite readily. To my credit, I knew they grew there, but I wasn't sure exactly where they might grow. Turns out, virtually everywhere!

Based upon the locations I went to and the hardiness zones of those locations, including 6b, 6a, and 5b(the mountain on the Fundy side above Berwick), it's safe to say after looking at Plantmaps map of Nova Scotia that Japanese maples can grow virtually everywhere in the province. Are there some microclimates where the winter weather would be too harsh? Absolutely. And this is going to vary from garden site to garden site, depending on exposure to wind, elevation and so forth. For example, I saw some maples on the mountain above the Annapolis Valley however, they were in sheltered locations. Those same trees may not survive in windy, exposed locations nearby. So, if you fall in the lower range of the hardiness zones (5b especially, and 6a), I would be extra careful with where you site your trees.

For 2025, not only do we have a ton of amazing trees coming to us from suppliers, but we also will be reducing shipping costs. For you good folks in Nova Scotia, this could mean as little as a $50 flat rate to ship two, 1 gallon trees. This would be similar for all the other provinces from Ontario and east. In BC, due to the already much lower cost to ship, you'll probably receive free shipping on the same quantity of 1 gallon trees in a small box. Awesome news all around.
